Regensburg 1657-HF 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 3130 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,493 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS FERDINAND III. 1/3 Reichstaler 1657 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1656 geändert), mit Titel Ferdinands III. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, one-third thaler of 1657, struck in the name of Ferdinand III, 1657/6 overdate. Extremely rare, handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This denomination, worth thirty kreuzer or one half gulden, was introduced in 1646 and struck only intermittently thereafter. Most, like this one, are rare. This type was struck 1654-57.
