Künker sale 405, lot 3167

This specimen was lot 3167 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/3 Reichstaler 1667, mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Mit dem Reichsapfel nahe der Krone. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (city of Regensburg, one third thaler of 1667, struck in the name of Leopold I, with the imperial orb near the crown. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

This denomination, worth thirty kreuzer or one half gulden, was introduced in 1646 and struck only intermittently thereafter. Most, like this one, are rare. This type was struck 1667, 1672, 1680.
