Regensburg 1656-HF 1/9 thaler
This specimen was lot 3143 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €500 (about US$656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS FERDINAND III. 1/9 Reichstaler 1656 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1655 geändert), mit Titel Ferdinands III. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. (city of Regensburg, one ninth thaler of 1656, 1656/55 overdate, in the name of Ferdinand III. Extremely rare, handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"
This denomination, worth ten kreuzer or one sixth gulden, was introduced in 1626 and struck only intermittently until 1667, when production ceased. Most, like this one, are rare. This type was struck 1654-57.
