Künker sale 405, lot 3127

This specimen was lot 3127 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,050 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS FERDINAND III. 1/2 Reichstaler 1657 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1656 geändert), mit Titel Ferdinands III. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön. (city of Regensburg, half thaler of 1657, 1657/6 overdate, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Extremely rare, handsome patina, planchet defects on the edge, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1656-57 with the value on the eagle side. The SCWC reports an even rarer half thaler (KM 148) with the arms of Austria on the eagle's breast instead of the value. None of the half thalers of the seventeenth century are common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14,17 g.

Catalog reference: KM 143, Beckenbauer 6228; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4628.
