Regensburg 1661-HF 1/9 thaler
This specimen was lot 3176 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,443 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/9 Reichstaler 1661 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1660 geändert), mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, leicht justiert, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, one-ninth thaler of 1661, struck in the name of Leopold I, 1661/0 overdate. Extremely rare, fine patina, light adjustment marks, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This denomination, worth ten kreuzer or one sixth gulden, was introduced in 1626 and struck only intermittently until 1667, when production ceased. Most, like this one, are rare. This type was struck 1659-67.
