Regensburg 1663-HF 1/6 thaler
This specimen was lot 3173 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,099 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/6 Reichstaler 1663 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1662 geändert), mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von größter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, one-sixth thaler of 1663, struck in the name of Leopold I, 1663/2 overdate. Extremely rare, cabinet example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This denomination, worth fifteen kreuzer or one quarter gulden, was struck only intermittently and most, like this one, are very rare. This type was struck 1659 and 1662-64.
