Künker sale 405, lot 3174

This specimen was lot 3174 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/6 Reichstaler 1664 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1663 geändert), mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Hieronymus Federer. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, one-sixth thaler of 1664, struck in the name of Leopold I, 1664/3 overdate. Extremely rare, cabinet example, fine patina, about uncirculated.)"

This denomination, worth fifteen kreuzer or one quarter gulden, was struck only intermittently and most, like this one, are very rare. This type was struck 1659 and 1662-64.
