Künker sale 405, lot 3117

This specimen was lot 3117 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,249 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS FERDINAND III. Reichstaler 1653 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1652 geändert), mit Titel Ferdinands III. Münzmeister Hans Siegmund Federer. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (6645572-006). (city of Regensburg, thaler of 1653, 1653/2 overdate, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Extremely rare, very attractive example with handsome patina, small edge defects, extremely fine. Graded NGC MS-62.)"

This type was struck 1652-53 only. The city of Regensburg issued a considerable variety of thalers after 1623 but all are rare.
