This specimen was lot 23653 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm IV 2 Taler 1842-A, MS64 NGC. A very choice example with full muted luster beneath light toning darkening in protected areas. The details on the reverse coat of arms are remarkable." This type was struck 1841-42. Despite being issued for only two years, it is the most common Prussian double thaler of the nineteenth century. The denomination became obsolete in the reform of 1871.
