This specimen was lot 31065 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm IV "Mining" Taler 1843-A MS64+ PCGS, Berlin mint. A conditionally difficult "Mining" Taler date where fractional and double Talers are much more frequently encountered, a fact confirmed by a sheer paucity of occupants at either grading service, this being the lone survivor. A quick survey of auction records corroborates the rarity of this date and type in anything appreciable, let alone Mint State. A gentle flash occupies the glasslike recesses, laying host to light underglow of peach and lavender tone. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This specimen is one of a type struck at the Berlin mint 1843-46, during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1840-61). It is scarce. Simultaneous with this mining thaler was struck a "shield thaler" with a different reverse (Dav-769).

Recorded mintage: 50,000 of this type plus 600,569 of the regular issue.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM 446, Dav-770, Thun-257.
