Künker Auction 441, lot 4563

This specimen was lot 4563 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €5,600 (about US$7,704 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-WEIMAR, HERZOGTUM, AB 1741 SACHSEN-WEIMAR-EISENACH, AB 1815 GROSSHERZOGTUM Carl Friedrich, 1828-1853. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1842. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 296, Osnabrück 2017, Nr. 2677. (grand duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Charles Frederick, 1828-53, double union thaler of 1842. Choice example, superb patina, about uncirculated.)"

This type of 1840-43 and 1848 has low mintages and is scarcer than the single thaler (Dav-845). Many German states struck double thalers in the 1840's and 1850's as the new vereinsthaler was too small to display the ego of the ruler.

Recorded mintage: 38,000.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge, this specimen 37,10 g.

Catalog reference: KM 200 (formerly KM C88), AKS 20; Dav-844; Kahnt 515; Thun 383.
