Künker sale 353, lot 3965

This specimen was lot 3965 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €60,000 (about US$83,502 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Taler 1798, A. Probe. FRID WILHELM KOENIG VON PREUSSEN Brustbild in Waffenrock r.//Gekrönter Adlerschild zwischen zwei wilden Männern, im Abschnitt: EIN THALER / 17 - 98 / A. Von allergrößter Seltenheit, wohl einziges bekanntes Exemplar in Privatbesitz. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Ferrari, Auktion Schulman, Amsterdam 1928, Nr. 2786 und der Slg. Johann Max Böttcher, Auktion Möller 42, Kassel 2006, Nr. 1103 ("Einzig bekanntes Exemplar"). (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, pattern thaler of 1798. Obverse: uniformed bust right; reverse: crowned eagle shield between two wildmen, date, value and mintmark below. Extremely rare, this is perhaps the only one in private hands. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The specification given here, that of a convention thaler, is taken from the SCWC, whereas the actual weight of the example sold is that of a reichs thaler. As no other has been sold in the last ten years, we have no comparison.
