Künker sale 353, lot 3945

This specimen was lot 3945 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €650 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. 2/3 Taler 1797, Berlin. Handelsmünze, geprägt für das Bankhaus Liepmann & Co. Mit FR WILH II KÖN V PREUSS am Anfang der Vorderseitenumschrift und mit Palmzweigen zu den Seiten des Wappens. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 49, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 1328. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William II, 1786-97, two-thirds thaler of 1797, Berlin mint, struck fo the Liepmann & Co Bank, with "FR WILH II KÖN V PREUSS" at the start of the obverse legend and palm branches to the sides of the coat of arms. Very fine or better.)"

This type of 1797 was the first issue of a gulden since the 1740's. It seems to have been struck at the request of a bank altho the circumstances are obscure. Several varieties exist but the denomination was once again abandoned. The gulden was two-thirds of a reichs thaler or half a convention thaler.
