Prussia 1799-A friedrichs d'or
This specimen was lot 708 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN STATES. PRUSSIA. Friedrich Wilhelm III, 1797-1840. Friedrich d'or, 1799 A. Berlin. Youthful uniformed bust l. Rv. Eagle on trophy of arms. Delightful full lustre. About Uncirculated." This denomination was introduced as a wilhelm d'or in 1737 during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm I (r. 1713-40) but continued as a friedrichs d'or during the rule of Frederick the Great (r. 1740-86). This type was issued 1798-1816. The denomination was retired in 1855.
