Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 43256
SB0123-43256r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43256 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1/2 Escudo, 1729. Lisbon Mint. Joao V. NGC AU Details--Graffiti." This type was struck in Lisbon 1723-50 and is often catalogued as a half escudo even tho it preceded the introduction of the Spanish half escudo by some fifteen years and contained about 10% more gold. Despite the low value listed in the SCWC, this little coin is quite scarce and one should expect to pay substantially over the estimate on the infrequent occasions it comes up for sale. While the basic type was struck for the whole of João reign, changes in the design of the shield on the reverse has caused the SCWC to break the issue into subtypes, of which this is KM-218.7. This denomination was last issued in 1821 during the reign of João VI. Brazilian 800 réis were struck 1727-86.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.78 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-92; KM-218.7.
