This specimen was lot 659 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $10,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "1727 12,800 reis. VF-35 (NGC). Laureated head of João V to right, legends and date around/crowned arms. Medium gold with darker orange toning highlights at the rims and around the devices. Some hairlines from an light cleaning. Purchased from Stack’s, November 16, 1945." This type is catalogued in the SCWC as an eight escudos even tho it is about 6% heavier than a Spanish eight escudos. It was struck in Lisbon 1724-32 and all dates are rare. See also the Brazil 1729-R 12800 réis.
