Sincona sale 23, lot 2959

This specimen was lot 2959 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$15,073 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, João V. 1706-1750 12800 Reis 1726. Lissabon. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, John V (1706-50), 12,800 réis of 1726, Lisbon mint, rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is catalogued in the SCWC as an eight escudos even tho it is about 6% heavier than a Spanish eight escudos. It was struck in Lisbon 1724-32 and all dates are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.68 g, 0.917 fine gold, .845 troy oz AGW, 36 mm diameter; this specimen 28.45 g.
