Portugal 1725 12800 reis
This specimen was lot 41324 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "A Wholesome Dobra of Joao V of Portugal. PORTUGAL. 8 Escudos (Dobra), 1725. Joao V (1706-50). NGC VF-35. Rich orange gold colored with surfaces that remain wholesome for the grade, showing no egregious signs of handling and bold, even detail everywhere except for a small area on the reverse where a few remnant planchet adjustments appear. RARE as a type and only the second example of this better date that we have seen offered in recent years, that example appearing in a 2010 UBS auction where it was graded "sehr schon-vorzuglich" (probably around AU quality by American standards) and brought 25,000 CHF hammer (approximately $24,000 USD hammer at the time)." This type is catalogued in the SCWC as an eight escudos even tho it is about 6% heavier than a Spanish eight escudos. It was struck in Lisbon 1724-32 and all dates are rare. Each date has been assigned a subtype in the SCWC as the design varies slightly with each year.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
