Brazil 1729-R 12800 reis
This specimen was lot 1138 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $25,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "1729 12,800 reis. Rio mint. MS-65 (NGC). Laureate head of João V to right, legends and date around/crowned oval arms. Bright yellow gold with exceptional lustre and prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Very well struck, very thin adjustment mark across obverse below eye, a few trivial handling marks but nearly pristine. A very impressive specimen. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The type was struck in Rio 1727-31.
