Portugal 1729 12800 reis
This specimen was lot 32357 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 12800 Reis (Dobra) 1729-(L) MS61 NGC, Lisbon mint. Without mintmark. Re-applied edge. Much scarcer than its Brazilian counterpart, this exceptional gold type features the intricately-styled portrait of João V with crowned arms in cartouche. Luminous surfaces absolutely delight with harvest-gold color that sets the design elements aglow in warm, original luster. Despite light handling in the way of minor wisps and marks--none of which are especially noteworthy on an individual level--the overall allure of this piece is incredibly engaging. A well-preserved example of this rare issue, highly-collectible at all levels, but especially coveted in this Mint State designation." This type is catalogued in the SCWC as an eight escudos even tho it is about 6% heavier than a Spanish eight escudos. It was struck in Lisbon 1724-32 and all dates are rare.
