This specimen was lot 25272 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 6400 Reis 1730, AU55 NGC, an attractive example with considerable mint luster, rare early date for this issue." This type was the 6400 réis or "joe" struck in large quantities in Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth century. The early dates (1723-32) are priced about double the later dates (1735-50).
