Sincona sale 90, lot 1532

This specimen was lot 1532 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$5,286 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL Königreich, João V. 1706-1750. Peça (6400 Reis) 1731, Lissabon. Selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, John V, 1706-50, gold piece or 6400 réis of 1751, Lisbon mint. Rare, Very fine.)"

This type was the 6400 réis or "joe" struck in large quantities in Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth century. The early dates (1723-32) are priced about double the later dates (1735-50).
