Sincona sale 43, lot 3686

This specimen was lot 3686 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,057 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, João V. 1706-1750 Peca 1735. Lissabon. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (kingdom of Portugal, John V, 1706-50, peça of 1735, Lisbon mint. Very rare in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

This type was the 6400 réis or "joe" struck in large quantities in Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth century. The early dates (1723-32) are priced about double the later dates (1735-50).
