"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A XII (1711/1712), Rom. Mit Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Fattinello Fattinelli, auf der Rückseite. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, testone of the year 12, Rome mint, with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Extremely fine.)"
Berman lists fifteen different testone for this pope; this type was struck years XI-XII (1711-13). The reverse motto is taken from Ecclesiastes 8:3: "multos enim perdidit aurum et argentum, et usque ad cor regum extendit et convertit." (For gold and silver hath destroyed many, and hath reached even to the heart of kings, and perverted them.) The testone was thirty baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 9.16 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,14 g.
