Künker sale 403, lot 1525

This specimen was lot 1525 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €550 (about US$722 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. Giulio ANN IX (1708/1709), Rom. Mit Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Giuseppe D’Aste, auf der Rückseite. Hübsche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, giulio of the year 9, Rome mint, with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Handsome patina, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck years IV thru IX (1704-09). The giulio was one tenth of a scudo. The reverse motto is taken from Deuteronomy 7:25, "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God." The very similar Ber-2413 (also KM 669) has engraver's initials and has an angel face at the top of the reverse instead of a star.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.05 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 3,01 g.

Catalog reference: Muntoni -; Toffanin 2297/9 (RR), Ber-2414, KM 741.
