Künker sale 403, lot 1512

This specimen was lot 1512 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$5,773 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Piastra ANN VII (1706/1707) Rom. Tobias mit Schutzengel. Stempelschneider Ermenegildo Hamerani. Mit dem Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Giuseppe D’Aste, auf der Rückseite. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, half piastra of the year 7, Rome mint. Obverse: Tobias with guardian angel; reverse: arms of the mintmaster. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"

The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler and was superseded by the scudo after 1740. The mezza piastra was a seldom used denomination.
