The first specimen was lot 24999 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $_. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Clement XI Piastra Year VII (1708), XF45 PCGS, attractive pewter gray patina with bold features, an attractive 18th century Piastra." This date is a one year type struck in 1708. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler and was superseded by the scudo after 1740. The reverse motto is taken from Psalms 121:7, "Fiat pax in virtute tua, et abundantia in turribus tuis." ("The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.")
