Papal States (1711) 1/2 piastra
This specimen was lot 6040 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Clemens XI. 1700-1721. 1/2 Piastra AN XI (1710/1711), Rom. Ansicht des Pantheons. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Italy, Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, half piastra of the year 11, Rome mint. View of the Pantheon. Very scarce in this quality, fine patina, extremely fine.)"
This date is listed in the SCWC for 1711 only. It is scarce. The mezza piastra was 52½ baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone). The denomination was last minted in 1742 and superseded by the mezzo scudo in 1753.
