This specimen was lot 1496 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. Scudo d’oro A XII (1712/1713), Rom. Mit FERRO / NOCEN / TIVS / AVRVM auf der Rückseite. GOLD. RR Prachtexemplar. Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 138, März 2008, Nr. 4721. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, scudo d'oro of the year 12, Rome mint. Very rare, cabinet example, uncirculated.)"
Papal coinage usually took its mottoes from the Vulgate Bible but this one, FERRO NOCENTIVS AVRVM ("Gold is more dangerous than iron"), is taken from the Roman moralist Ovid. This scudo d'oro was reissued in 1717 but with a different motto on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
