Papal St Fr-202 rev Tom F.jpg

This scudo d'oro was struck for Clement XI (1700-21), one of seven different scudi d'oro (Fr-187, -192, -195, -202, -204, -206, -207) from his reign. This one is fairly scarce. It had been issued previously in 1712 but with a different motto on the reverse. This specimen was lot 30238 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Clement XI gold Scudo d'oro ND (1717)-R Anno XVIII MS64 NGC, Rome mint. A superb example, highly attractive and with lustrous, golden surfaces that exhibit instances of russet tone surrounding the devices. The design features are boldly-struck and intricately detailed. Despite this coin's relatively small size, it is an extremely scarce and seldom offered one-year type, extremely well-preserved, and with all the hallmarks of a premium specimen."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.36 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-202, KM 770, Ber-2364.
