Papal States (1717) giulio
This specimen was lot 1531 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$787 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. Giulio AN XVIII (1717/1718), Rom. Mit Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Fausto Crispolti, auf der Rückseite. Hübsche Tönung, fast Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, giulio of year 18, Rome mint, with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Handsome toning, about uncirculated.)"
Berman lists fifteen different guilii for this pope; Berman-2415 has the reverse motto PRVDENTIA/PRETIOSIOR/EST/ARGENTO ("Prudence is more precious than silver", Proverbs 16:16). It was struck during year XIX. The giulio was ten baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone).
