SB222-74808r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74808 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. 50 Centavos, 1915. PCGS MS-62. Well struck for the type, this Revolutionary issue displays strong details and a pocket of polychromatic toning near the upper peripheries." The state of Oaxaca more or less seceded from Mexico during the Revolution and declared itself neutral in the conflict. It was spared the brunt of the fighting, which occurred in the north and around Mexico City. The state also issued the widest variety of coinage, ranging from copper one centavos to gold sixty pesos. As the dies for this coin were hand made, numerous varieties (KM 734, 735, 736, 738, 739) exist. Native son Benito Juarez was prominently featured as often as possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.54 g, silver, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-735.
