SB524-34337r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34337 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. 50 Centavos, 1915. NGC MS-63. 5th Bust Variety. A shimmery Choice example of this silver minor with a pleasing olive tint." The state of Oaxaca more or less seceded from Mexico during the Revolution and declared itself neutral in the conflict. It was spared the brunt of the fighting, which occurred in the north and around Mexico City. The state also issued the widest variety of coinage, ranging from copper one centavos to gold sixty pesos. As the dies for this coin were hand made, numerous varieties (KM 734, 735, 736, 738, 739) exist. Native son Benito Juarez was prominently featured as often as possible. The SCWC describes this variety as having a bust, "Heavy with short unfinished lapels".

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 4.07 g, silver, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-734; GB-336.
