Nurnberg 1632 2 ducats Fr-1823
The first specimen was lot 403 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,880 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Nurnberg, City. 2 Dukaten 1632. Auf den Westfälischen Frieden. Stempel von G. Nürnberger der Ältere. Lammprägung. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Rand bearbeitet. Leicht gewellt. (Germany, city of Nurnberg, double "lamb" ducat of 1632, on the peace of Westphalia. Dies by G. Nurnberger the Elder. Very fine-extremely fine, Tooling on edge, Slightly wavy flan.)"
The second specimen was lot 1998 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,948 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NÜRNBERG, STADT, 2 Dukaten 1632. Doppelter Friedenswunschdukat. GOLD. RR Unregelmäßiger Schrötling, etwas gewellt, sehr schön. (city of Nuremberg, double ducat of 1632, hoping for peace. Very rare, irregular planchet, bent, very fine.)"
This double ducat and the accompanying single ducat (Fr-1824) were issued to urge the coming of peace. Alas, the signing of the Peace of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War did not occur until 1648.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, the first specimen 6.63 g, the second specimen 6,91 g.
