Nurnberg 1635 ducat Fr-1826
This specimen was lot 367 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$913 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND, Nürnberg, Stadt, Dukat 1635. Nach links blickender Adler. Rv. Zwei Wappen gehalten von einem Engel. Lt. gew. Sehr schön." (City of Nuremberg, ducat of 1635. Obverse: eagle facing left; reverse: two shields held by an angel. Very Fine)
This type has the date in a chronogram, a fad popular in Germany. The capital letters in the obverse legend, when converted to Roman numerals and added up, make 1635. The type was issued sporadically 1635-86 along with several other types of ducats, fractional ducats and multiple ducats. This date is scarce but not rare. The city was annexed to Bavaria in 1806.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,45 g.
