Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73024

This specimen was lot 73024 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $439.20. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1835/4-Do RM. Durango Mint. NGC EF-45. Very scarce. Second finest of four examples graded by NGC. Cataloger believes this to be 1837/4 not noted by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The Durango mint produced two reales 1826, 1832-35 and 1841-61. This overdate, listed by the SCWC as 1835/4, could be 1837/4 as stated by the auctioneers, but the recutting is so clumsily done that it is impossible to tell. It's a rare date either way. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) is recorded for the years 1830-48. The French eagle shown here is distinctive to this mint. Other mints include Zacatecas, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Potosi, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.
