SB823-57044r.jpg

This specimen was lot 57044 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1733/2-Mo F. Mexico City Mint. Philip V. PCGS VF-25." This is the final cob eight reales struck in Mexico City. It is listed for 1729-33, the result of a debasement in 1728 from 0.931 to 0.917 fine silver. In 1733, Mexico also issued klippe eight reales and pillar eight reales, likely at separate facilities. Spanish authorities ordered Mexico City to switch from cobs to milled coinage in 1729 and the years 1732-34 are when the transition occurred. Lima did not switch until 1751 and Potosi did not switch until 1769.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.82 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9356, KM-47a; Cal-1428.
