Peru 1733-L N 8 reales
This specimen was lot 696 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, 1733 N, cross-of-five-dots at top, ex-Ugaz. Good full pillars and cross-lions-castles with bold date and part of another, parts of all three mintmarks and assayers, toned VF with flat peripheries, scarce date (first example we have offered at auction). Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection and the Sotheby's auction of October 1992 (lot 121)." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Assayer Negron y Colmenares ("N") stamped his coins 1728-40. The cobs were debased from 0.931 to 0.917 fine in 1728.
