Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 986
Sedwick 38-0986r.jpg

This specimen was lot 986 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA, Guatemala City, cob 8 reales, 1733 J, very rare, NGC XF details / saltwater damage / Hollandia (Shipwreck Blue Label). Big, rectangular flan with bold full pillars-and-globes and shield despite off-center strike, clear 33 of date and bold full denomination *8*, traces of dark oxidation but practically corrosion-free. The Guatemala cob 8 reales of 1733 is officially the first "dollar" of Central America, struck just one year after the comparatively common but highly lauded 1732 first-date pillar dollar of Mexico and using the same basic design but without the benefit of proper milling equipment. From the Hollandia (1743), pedigreed to the Darby Collection of Guatemala Silver Cobs (stated on label)." This type was struck 1733-43 at Guatemala. After repeated petitions, Guatemala was finally granted a mint in 1733. The equipment available was cast-offs from the Mexico City mint. The coins of 1733-53 are cobs struck using pillar dies; Guatemala was the only mint to do this. The minors (half reales, one reales and two reales) are all very scarce despite their low catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.72 grams.
