Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 1036
Sedwick 38-1036r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1036 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA, Guatemala City, cob 1 real, 1733 J, rare. Full 733 of date in a more or less horizontal line ("straight date" variety, first we have seen) as opposed to the usual curve, most of shield and pillars despite flatness and wear (Good), spotty dark toning, hole at top, desirable first date of issue. Pedigreed to the Darby Collection of Guatemala Silver Cobs." This type was struck 1733-43 at Guatemala. After repeated petitions, Guatemala was finally granted a mint in 1733. The equipment available was cast-offs from the Mexico City mint. The coins of 1733-53 are cobs struck using pillar dies; Guatemala was the only mint to do this. The minors (half reales, one reales and two reales) are all very scarce despite their low catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 2.60 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-8493, S-G1; Cal-354; KM-3; JP-1R1b.
