Mexico 1731-Mo F 8 reales
This specimen was lot 6905 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1731-(F). Philip V (1700-46). NGC FINE-15. Full date and mint mark visible as well as all four quadrants of the lions and castles. A conservatively graded piece with more on offer than the numeric grade might indicate." This specimen is a silver cob eight reales struck at Mexico City the year before the conversion to milled coinage. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. This type is separated from KM 40, struck 1701-28, by its lower fineness; the earlier issues were 0.931 fine silver.
