Mexico 1730-Mo R 8 reales
The first specimen was lot 4394 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $299. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. Cob 8 Reales, 1730-Mo R. Philip V. NGC graded Fine, Details (Chopmarked)." The second specimen was lot 504 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[2] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1730R, ex-Rudman. Choice specimen with full and bold date and oMR, excellent full cross, lovely toning, typically flat peripheries, AVF overall. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman numismatic cabinet." These specimens are silver cob eight reales struck at Mexico City in the years before the conversion to milled coinage. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. This type is separated from KM 47, struck 1701-28, by its lower fineness; the earlier issues were 0.931 fine silver. Assayers "R", "G" and possibly "F" are recorded for 1730.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.917 fine silver, .797 troy oz ASW, the second specimen 27.34 grams.
