Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72685
SB1024-72685r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72685 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob 8 Reales, 1730-L N. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS EF-40. A highly appealing cob from Lima. The denomination, both assayers, a mintmark, and a bold three-digit date all present handsomely on the obverse. The reverse is no less satisfying, adding another clear date and mintmark around the central design. Lacking any post-mint damage and graced with a lovely cabinet tone, it makes a strong contender for any collector of the series. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 693 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $2,160. This type was struck for Philip V 1726-47. In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. Assayer Negron y Colmenares ("N") stamped his coins 1728-40. The cobs were debased from 0.931 to 0.917 fine in 1728.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.72 g.
