Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72685
SB1024-72685r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72685 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob 8 Reales, 1730-L N. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS EF-40. A highly appealing cob from Lima. The denomination, both assayers, a mintmark, and a bold three-digit date all present handsomely on the obverse. The reverse is no less satisfying, adding another clear date and mintmark around the central design. Lacking any post-mint damage and graced with a lovely cabinet tone, it makes a strong contender for any collector of the series. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This type was struck for Philip V 1726-47. In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. Assayer Negron y Colmenares stamped his coins 1728-38. The cobs were debased from 0.931 to 0.917 fine in 1728.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.72 g.
