Peru 1730-L N 2 reales
This specimen was lot 706 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $3,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales Royal (galano), 1730 N, extremely rare, ex-Santa Rosa de Lima. Beautiful full inner details and small parts of legend visible, all three dates and mintmarks and assayers in evidence, richly old-toned VF with tiny hole at bottom of cross / top of pillars, very attractive overall. By our records, only two are known for this date. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection of Lima Silver Cob 2 Reales and to the Santa Rosa de Lima Collection (Sedwick Auction 18, lot 579)." In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. In 1728, the silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine, with no change in design, and struck in this style until 1747. Assayer Negron y Colmenares stamped his coins 1728-38. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. "Royals" such as this were struck for presentation.
