Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands in 1949. Being a scattered series of islands with differing traditions, Indonesia has struggled to remain a cohesive nation, hampered by corruption on a colossal scale. The coin shown is a copper-nickel 50 rupiah featuring a Greater Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea apoda) on the reverse. It is a one-year type.
