Indonesia obtained independence from the Netherlands in 1949 and has struggled since to remain united. Many in the outlying islands feel little allegiance to the corrupt and brutal regime in Jakarta. The coin was demonetized in 1996. In 1982, US$1 = 650 rupiah; today (October 2019) US$1 = 14,138 rupiah.
