Sincona sale 38, lot 1446

This specimen was lot 1446 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$960 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Republik, seit 1949 5000 Rupiah 1970. Tempelstatue. Polierte Platte. FDC. (republic of Indonesia, since 1949, five thousand rupiah of 1970, temple statue, Choice Proof.)"

This NCLT is rather scarce. It was accompanied by 2000 rupiah (KM 28), 10000 rupiah (KM 30) and two 20000 rupiah (KM 31, 32) issued for the 25th anniversary of independence in 1970. Being a scattered series of islands with differing traditions, Indonesia has struggled to remain a cohesive nation, hampered by corruption on a colossal scale.

Recorded mintage: mintage unknown but all proofs.

Specification: 12.54 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 12.20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 29. Fr-4.
