Sincona sale 80, lot 3067

This specimen was lot 3067 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Province of Holland, 2 Dukaten 1740, Dordrecht. Abschlag von den Stempeln des Scheepjeschilling (6 Stüber). Stempel der Jahreszahl aus 1739 geändert. Sehr seltenes Jahr und aussergewöhnliche Erhaltung. PCGS MS62+. (Netherlands, province of Holland, double ducat of 1740/39, Dordrecht mint, struck using ship shilling dies. Very rare date and extraordinary condition.)"

This scheepjesschelling was struck for Holland, a province of the Netherlands, 1701-02, 1705, 1708-37, 1745-63 and 1767. It is priced fairly low in the SCWC but is seldom seen at American coin shows, particularly in nice condition. These also occasionally turn up struck in gold, as here.

Recorded mintage: unknown. None were struck for circulation in 1740.

Specification: circulation issue 4.95 g, 0.583 fine silver, .093 troy oz ASW, presentation issue 7 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 7.09 g.
