This specimen was lot 71756 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Duit, 1739. NGC MS-65 Brown. This nicely preserved and very attractive copper minor issue exhibits a bold strike with lovely smooth chocolate brown patina with a hint iridescence adding to its pleasing appearance." Copper duits of this design are listed for 1702-80 and are fairly inexpensive tho not often seen at American coin shows. There is also an extensive series of presentation strikes in silver and gold (shown here as the second specimen). The copper duit was one eighth of a stuiver but this coin, which weighed as much as a double ducat, was worth considerably more. The second specimen was lot 33824 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $9,600. The lot description[2] noted, "Netherlands: Holland. Provincial gold Duit 1739 MS62 NGC, Dordrecht mint. An eye-catching 18th century example of beautiful craftsmanship and fine detailing. The workmanship emphasizes the value placed on quality and accuracy during its minting as each device is crisply articulated and visually magnetic. To accent its sharp legends and center-struck motifs, a stunning toning of neon-sunset radiance graces the lower field. A seldom encountered off-metal gold strike, struck in this case to the weight of 2 Ducats, that is decidedly desirable in near-Choice Mint State. From the Coenen Collection."

Recorded mintage: 5,250,000.

Specification: 3.84 g, copper. The second specimen is 6.89 g.

Catalog reference: KM-80. The second specimen is KM 80b, Delm-821, PW-Ho84.2.
