Holland 1739 stuiver
The first specimen was lot 3649 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"THE NETHERLANDS | Province of Holland, 1/2 Dukat 1739. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Stübers. Vorzüglich. Leicht berieben. (Netherlands, province of Holland, half ducat of 1739, struck on stuiver dies. Extremely fine, Slightly polished.)"
The second specimen was lot 2824 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS: Dutch Republic, AR stuiver, Holland, 1739, a choice lustrous mint state example, PCGS graded MS65. Referred to as a bezemstuiver. The name is a compound of bezem (broom) and stuiver (a small value silver coin). Named after the resemblance that the base of the bundle of arrows, depicted on the coin, bears to a broom." This type was struck in Holland 1738-40 and 1760-64 of debased silver, after which the denomination was retired. The catalog also records a lengthy series struck in gold. The gold stuiver weighed half a ducat.
